1. About Preface

Preface ("we," "us," or "our") is an iOS application that helps you practice focus and intentional device use through a short "mindfulness check-in" (the "Ritual") when you attempt to open apps you add to your in-app blocklist.

Depending on iOS/system behavior and your device settings, Preface may present the Ritual at the time you attempt to open a blocked app and may allow you to choose whether to continue to that app. Preface does not guarantee that every attempt to open an app will always result in the Ritual being shown.

Preface relies on iOS system capabilities and user-permitted automation/interception behaviors. Those capabilities can vary across iOS versions, devices, and user permissions.

2. License to Use the App

Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to download and use Preface for your personal, non-commercial use in accordance with the App Store rules and any documentation provided in the app.

3. No Account Required; On-Device Data

Preface does not require you to create an account. To provide the Ritual and your preferences (such as your selected blocklist and settings), Preface stores relevant data locally on your device.

Some additional, limited information may be collected or processed for app performance, stability, and subscription/purchase validation, as described in our Privacy Policy.

4. Subscriptions & Payments

Preface may offer premium features through an auto-renewing subscription.

Payments: Payments are processed through the Apple App Store. We do not have access to your payment details.
Trials: If a free trial is offered, it will be clearly indicated in the app before you purchase.
Auto-renewal: Your subscription may renew automatically unless you cancel in advance.
Cancellation: You can cancel your subscription in your iPhone's Apple ID subscription settings.
Refunds: Refunds are handled according to Apple's App Store refund policies and applicable law.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

Use Preface for unlawful, harmful, or unintended purposes.
Attempt to bypass, disable, or circumvent Preface's functionality (including by interfering with automation flows, prompts, permissions, or interception behavior).
Reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or tamper with Preface, or attempt to discover its source code or underlying implementation.
Introduce malware or attempt to disrupt the normal operation of Preface.

We may restrict or suspend access if we reasonably believe you have violated these Terms.

6. Intellectual Property

Preface, including its app design, interface, branding, and the quote/ritual content provided within the app, is owned by us or our licensors and is protected by applicable intellectual property laws. You may not copy, distribute, publicly display, or create derivative works of Preface or its content without permission.

7. Wellness Disclaimer

The Ritual is intended for general wellness, motivation, and habit-building. Preface is not medical advice. Preface does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition.

8. Disclaimer of Warranties

Preface is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not guarantee that Preface will always function uninterrupted, error-free, or as expected.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, revenue, or data arising out of or related to your use of Preface.

10. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Any changes will be reflected with a new "Effective Date." Continued use of Preface after the changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
